Look What I'm Doing This Summer

Meet the Dallas Area Chapter Summer Interns

Through Jewish Family Service, Bank of America, and various other programs, the American Red Cross-Dallas Area Chapter has received nine summer interns. The student interns are extremely valuable because they help the Chapter to the better serve the community by filling resource gaps.

However, the Dallas Area Chapter is not the only one to benefit from the program. The intern gains the opportunity to see a project from beginning to end and has work experience for his or her resume. An internship at the Red Cross can expose a student’s talents and help them find their paths. To learn more about our interns, see below.

I Decided To Change Lives Over My Summer Vacation!

Aliza Schick
AlizaMy name is Aliza Schick and I am a senior in Mesorah High School, an Orthodox Jewish high school for girls. I was so excited when I heard that Jewish Family Service was offering internship opportunities at various community nonprofit organizations because I knew from the start that I would learn so much. I chose to intern at the American Red Cross because I have always admired the way that they are always there for people in a crisis and how they are the leading agency that provides relief during local and national disasters. I was curious to find out what work goes into preparing for large-scale disasters and worked to meet people with experience in educating, preparing, and providing aid to the community. I am working in the Ccommunications and Marketing department and am having so much fun writing stories for the various Red Cross newsletters and blogs, observing press interviews, and designing publications. I hope to gain experience in a work environment and maybe even an insight into what career I would like to pursue one day. In my free time I enjoy reading, writing, sewing, designing graphics and videos, operating two businesses from my house, and spending time with my family and friends. I am considering being a pediatric neurosurgeon, a graphic designer, or a magazine editor.

Ashley Patterson
I am currently attending University of North Texas and finishing my emergency management degree. My internship at the Red Cross is in Information Management Support Ssystems and Disaster Assessment. When I graduate from college I am looking forward to doing a job that involves managing animals during a disaster. I work as a technician at an animal shelter and one of my hobbies is wakeboarding.

Corie Zetley
CorieI’m a senior at J.J. Pearce High School and my favorite subject is psychology. I like to hang out with my friends and family, go to the movies and the mall, and travel. My favorite destinations so far have been Israel, Paris, and Hawaii. When I heard about the opportunity for an internship through Jewish Family Service, I decided to apply because I knew I would learn a lot from this experience. I thought it would be interesting to see what goes on behind the scenes of the American Red Cross and to gain experience in a real work environment. I am interning in the Financial Development department and am enjoying helping in fundraising efforts for this amazing organization. In my free time I also volunteer in Senator Shapiro’s Exploratory Committee. There I help run events and organize binders of all her recent press appearances. I am so excited to have this amazing opportunity and am really enjoying my work so far.

Ilan Attar
IlanI am a senior at Yavneh Academy, a private modern orthodox Jewish school. Some of the things I like to do are hang out with friends, play basketball, go to the movies, and listen to music. As for my future, I am looking into majoring in either business or law. The internship offered through the Jewish Family Service’s Rabbi Klein program is meant to provide as much real work experience as possible and so I thought that working at the American Red Cross would be the right choice. Not only am I gaining work experience, I am also helping to change lives and make a significant difference in the world. I am interning in the Staff Services department and one of my jobs is ensuring that the contact information we have for our volunteers is accurate so that we can contact them in an emergency. This experience has already had an effect in encouraging me to take a more active role in helping others in my community.

Joe Posada
JoeI am 18 years old and entering my freshman year of college at University of Texas at Dallas. I first began interning when I was in Adamson High Schoo. Along with three schools, my school began a program called Education is Freedom (EID) and I received an internship in a corporate environment. Now I am working under the Bank of America grant in the nonprofit industry. I feel that these internships have given me more insight into the real world and will help me be able to get a good job when I finish college. I am hoping to major in emerging communications and multimedia; one of my hobbies is web design. I also enjoy playing chess and dominoes and volunteering at my old high school as a mentor. At the American Red Cross, I work in the Staff Services department making volunteer applications, conducting interviews, profiling potential volunteers, and entering all the information into a database. I also help out with the Red Cross Clubs which help engage younger students and am setting up a mini retreat for them which will take place the last week of July.

Mickey Stroup
MickeyMy name is Mickey and I am interning at the Red Cross as part of my emergency management degree from the University of North Texas. Some of the projects I am currently working on include looking for free maps online and finding better ways to do data management and collection from the field during a disaster. When I'm not at the Red Cross, I work in purchasing and payment services at UNT. I enjoy going to movies, quilting, and playing with my dog Abigail.

Tim Dannemiller
TimHi, my name is Tim and I am interning in the Emergency Planing department, which I hope to major in at University of North Texas. I am currently organizing the files we have about emergency evacuation shelters and seeing what we need to add to make our system more efficient during an emergency. I decided to intern at the American Red Cross because I wanted the learning experience and I was required to have an internship to finish my degree. I have four jobs: I am a student, I am an intern at the Red Cross, I am in the Navy Reserves, and on the weekends I work as a security guard for Blue Cross/Blue Shield. When I finish my degree, I would like to pursue a career in emergency management coordination, either for a city or FEMA. My military background inspired me to go into this field. I spent ten years in the military, one of which was active duty in Kuwait from 2006-2007, where I worked as a customs officer. When a storm would hit, I would fall into the role of doing emergency response and recovery because I would have to call people to help out. I also rewrote the military’s evacuation plan because I felt it was extremely unclear and confusing. In addition, when I lived in Florida I went through many different storms, including the devastating Hurricane Katrina. I have also lived in Lubbock and witnessed many tornadoes. I hope that my internship at the Red Cross will train me so that I am qualified to work in this field that I am so passionate about.

Tyler Gastineau
TylerMy name is Tyler and I am an intern for Emergency Response and Recovery, which is mainly responsible for assessing the damage caused by a storm or disaster and developing a response plan. I am currently updating the continuity plan which ensures that every Red Cross volunteer and employee knows what to do in the event of a disaster. In addition to updating contact information so, I am also taking inventory of all our supplies. I am currently enrolled at the University of North Texas and my major will be Emergency Administration and Disaster Planning. I knew it was important for me to intern in a setting like the Red Cross because it offers me experience in the career that I am interested in. One of my favorite parts of this internship is that I am part of the “inside track” and I always know where there are disasters such as fires and storms, even before they are reported by the media. After I graduate, I am looking forward to a career in Emergency Administration and Disaster Planning and I would like to work part of my time in an office and the other part assessing damage on the field. In addition, I have just completed my training to be an officer in the Marine Corps.
